The Rapes go on. How do we?

"It appears to be that a rod was inserted into her and it was pulled out with so much force that the act brought out her intestines along. That is probably the only thing that explains such severe damage to her intestines," he said.

I was doing my studies when I read this. I had to rush to the bathroom to cry as reading it left me out of my breath and I felt as if I had no bones left that could hold me up. Through various points in the day, this detail got imprinted in my mind & I shall never be able to erase it from my memory hierarchy, Or un-imagine it.

For some context, seven days ago, a 23-year-old para-medical student was gang-raped in New Delhi, India’s capital. She'd gone with her boyfriend out for a  movie on a leisurely Sunday evening in South Delhi (arguably, one of the most “posh” areas of New Delhi, and therefore the safest). A private bus with tinted windows stopped by.And, the unsuspecting duo boarded the bus. Over the next several hours, the girl was raped by six men, her friend was mercilessly thrashed and then they were dumped naked on the side of a freeway. The battered duo lay on the floor for almost an hour, bleeding and shivering in Delhi’s December chill. She was assaulted so nefariously that her intestines had to be removed. If she survives, she will have to be fed intravenously for the rest of her life.

Post this incident, there has been a huge outcry in Delhi and in other cities. Candle-Light vigils, rallies, & placards have sprung up. There are protests for sweeping policy changes -- for capital punishment for rape, for the rapists to be publicly stoned/Hanged and, more prominently, for  their castration, chemical or otherwise.

I see Facebook and Twitter being abuzzed with angry posts, But what good have they done so far, I wonder?  The protestors are still being manhandled, being blasted by the water canons and tear gas shells. I get not what the Delhi Police is actually trying to protect. The enormous edifice of the mighty corridors, especially when our dear ministers are sitting at home?
“At what stage do we say collectively and in one voice: Enough?”

I don’t want these beasts who committed this heinous act to get scot-free, hence I wouldn’t opine for death penalty, at all, instead I’d advocate that gruesome and excruciating pain must be inflicted on these cannibals, so that they die of a slow agonizing torture. These culprits must be confined within a cage full of rodents and rats which should then be heated up, so that the freaking rats frantically burrow themselves in the stomach and intestines of these monsters while finding a way out of the heated cage. Even this wouldn’t satiate me.
But, May be something horrible like this can prove out to be a deterrent for the brutes and the other potential perpetrators who are running freely in Delhi and other parts of the country.

Furthermore, I voice for an effective cop patrolling in every nook and corner of the capital, a sensitized police force, CCTV cameras in all the Public Transport, and finally I’d posit that fast-track courts can continue to operate but a fast-track JUSTICE is the need of the hour.

The bureaucrats and our ‘dear mighty’ government have shamed the largest democracy of the world. What will you say about a sombre politician when he comments  "A woman invites rape, because she is biologically programmed for coitus"?   It seethes me when I see a TV reporter getting heckled and eve-teased while she was out on the streets covering this incident, and a constable witnesses this dastardly act but rather chooses a selective blindness and doesn't budge an inch to take a stringent action. Will this scenario ever change? Leaders err Rulers claim, that Indians will be on moon by 2020, India will be the largest economy in 2047, India will be a super-power by 2063, But Sir, allow me to ask this, In which year will women get safety and security?
It hurts me bad when I write, We live in a country that has innumerable politicians in the legislative assemblies convicted of statutory Rape(s). Sick.
It only inspires disgust & sadness in my gut.

So while I conclude writing this , A frightening thought ensnares me, “It could have happened with Me, or with somebody who fall in my radius”.
Guess only two women could forever be safe in Delhi, Sheila Dixit and Sonia Gandhi,  But, What about the rest of us, who time and again succumb to the guillotine of Misogyny, Patriarchal society and male depravity?

Wake up Government.
I dare you to be affirmative this time.
